How to Prevent Cable Jacket Damage When Using Underground Cable Rollers
последние новости компании о How to Prevent Cable Jacket Damage When Using Underground Cable Rollers

A scuffed jacket is the most common — and most avoidable — defect in underground cable installation. The damage rarely comes from a single dramatic overload; it comes from rollers spaced too far apart, from conveyors squeezing too hard, or from lead ropes dragging against concrete. This guide shows how the correct underground cable equipment prevents cable jacket damage.

Where Jacket Damage Actually Starts

Three mechanisms dominate:

  • Sag between rollers. If rollers are too far apart the cable droops, touches the trench floor and abrades its outer sheath.
  • Excess clamping force. A conveyor or pusher that grips harder than necessary flattens the jacket at the drive point.
  • Sharp pulls at entry. A lead rope or rodder pulled through a rough duct mouth cuts the sheath at the bell mouth.

Match the Conveyor Force to the Cable

The conveyor is the component that most often damages a jacket because it grips the cable directly. Rated force and clamping pressure must suit the cable diameter. A machine rated at 3.5 kN with controlled clamping is appropriate for a typical distribution cable; an oversized machine set too tight is not. The Galaxy GLDSJ-3 conveyor is a good reference point:

Reference Specification — Cable Conveyor

Parameter Value
Rated force 3.5 kN
Conveying speed 7 m/min
Motor power 2 × 1.10 kW
Power supply AC 380 V
Dimensions 980 × 500 × 440 mm
Cable range (class of unit) 25–180 mm

Use a Duct Rodder, Not a Bare Rope, for the First Pass

Before the cable is pulled, the duct is proved and the lead rope placed. A fiberglass duct rodder glides over sharp bell mouths and protects both the duct and the subsequent pull. Its stiffness and smooth surface are key parameters:

Parameter Value
Diameter 14 mm
Standard length 300 m
Weight 110 kg
Package dimensions 147 × 137 × 45 cm
Warranty 1 year

Choose Rollers for the Duct and Cable

Rollers are not one product. Straight-run rollers, corner rollers and bell-mouth rollers each solve a different geometry. On long straight sections, plain grooved rollers with free-turning bearings keep friction low. At corners, larger-diameter rollers reduce the contact pressure that scuffs a jacket. At the duct mouth, a flared entry roller guides the cable without a sharp edge. Matching the roller to the location is as important as spacing it correctly, and it is the cheapest way to stop jacket damage before the pull starts.

Roller Spacing and Alignment Rules

  1. Set roller spacing so the cable sags less than one cable diameter between supports.
  2. Install a roller at every bend and at both ends of every curve.
  3. Keep all rollers at the same height and aligned with the duct axis.
  4. Lubricate the duct and cable before the pull begins.
  5. Never let the cable rest on the trench floor; support it continuously.
  6. Inspect the jacket at each roller after the pull and log any scuffing.

For long runs, the 7 m/min underground cable pulling equipment with its gentle 3.5 kN drive keeps the jacket under low, even stress, while the Underground Cable Equipment range supplies duct rodders and entry tools that protect the cable at every inlet.

FAQ

What is the biggest cause of cable jacket damage?

Over-spaced rollers and excess conveyor clamping force. Both let the cable rub or distort locally instead of moving in a straight, supported line.

Can a duct rodder scratch the jacket?

A smooth fiberglass rodder clears the duct before the cable arrives, so the cable never meets a rough surface. Rodding first is a routine protection step.

How often should rollers be checked?

Check alignment and freedom of rotation at every shift. A seized roller turns into a fixed abrasion point within meters of cable travel.
